NAF battles underwater conditions to recover crashed aircraft in Ondo

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed several pumping machines to drain water around the site of its crashed aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State, as recovery teams work to access the main wreckage submerged in the river.

The operation comes amid concerns among residents that the recovery exercise could affect their water sources, prompting the Air Force to engage community leaders and residents to address their fears.

In a statement, NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the engagement was led by the Air Officer Commanding, Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal MC Ekwueme, who acknowledged the concerns raised by the community and assured residents that the service was committed to addressing them.

According to the statement, recovery teams have made significant progress despite the difficult terrain and challenging underwater conditions at the crash site.

The Air Force explained that the aircraft wreckage remained submerged and deeply embedded in the riverbed, making the deployment of pumping equipment necessary to facilitate access to the site.

“This painstaking process requires sustained effort, specialised technical support and careful coordination to advance the recovery operations safely and effectively,” the statement said.

The NAF acknowledged the grief of families affected by the crash and the concerns of Nigerians awaiting further developments.

It added that personnel were working to recover the wreckage while prioritising safety and preserving the dignity of the victims.

The deployment of the pumping machines, the service said, represented a significant step towards the next phase of the recovery operation.

Beyond the recovery exercise, the Air Force reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the families of those who died in the crash.

The statement said the Chief of the Air Staff had assured bereaved families of the service’s support as they navigate the difficult period.

It added that applicable entitlements, including benevolent funds, scholarships for eligible children and other approved welfare benefits, would be processed.

The NAF also disclosed that a dedicated helpline had been established at its headquarters to enable affected families to obtain timely and appropriate information.

Reaffirming its commitment to the people of Igbokoda, the service said it would continue engaging residents and addressing environmental concerns through appropriate channels.

The Air Force assured the public that recovery operations would continue, alongside welfare support for bereaved families, while verified updates would be provided as significant developments occur.
