Guinea-Bissau defeated the Super Eagles of Nigeria 3-0 in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L match at the Estádio 24 de Setembro in Bissau on Tuesday.
The hosts took the lead in the 15th minute through Franculino Djú, who fired a left-footed effort past Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali after being played through by Renato Nhaga.
The Super Eagles came close to levelling before the break when Alex Iwobi created an opportunity for Ademola Lookman, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Fernando Embadjé made a crucial save to preserve his side’s advantage.
Guinea-Bissau continued to apply pressure after the restart and doubled their lead in the 65th minute through Mama Baldé.
Baldé received a pass from Mamadi Camará on the left before sending a low shot into the Nigerian net.
Nigeria coach Eric Chelle responded with a double substitution in the 75th minute, bringing on George Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika for Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi.
The changes, however, failed to produce the desired response as the Super Eagles struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.
Ilenikhena came close to reducing the deficit in the 85th minute, but Embadjé produced another important save to deny the Nigerian forward.
Guinea-Bissau completed the victory in stoppage time when Álvaro Djaló converted a through ball from Tamble Monteiro with his right foot to make it 3-0.
The result came after both teams had opened their Group L campaigns with victories. Guinea-Bissau defeated Tanzania 2-0, while Nigeria came from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo.
The defeat leaves Nigeria with work to do in the race for the available qualifying place in Group L, with Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the 2027 tournament as one of the co-hosts.
