Sen. Nicholas Tofowomo, representing Ondo South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, on Friday lauded the Federal Government’s donation of relief materials to the Ayetoro community in Ondo State.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Thursday donated roofing sheets, nails, mattresses, clothes and food items to the community ravaged by the sea incursion.
Tofowomo expressed the appreciation in a statement issued by his media aide, Mr Olumide Akinrinlola, in Okitipupa.
He described the donation of the materials to the affected victims as hearing of the voices of the downtrodden.
The lawmaker said that he had on Nov. 25, 2020, adopted a motion titled: “Another Cry to Rescue Ayetoro Community in Ondo State from Continuous Ocean Surge.”
He said that on May 18, 2021, the Senate had urged the government to urgently rescue Ayetoro community, being ravaged by the sea incursion.
According to the parliamentarian, this call for rescue later results in the intervention by NEMA.
“I thank the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan, for expediting action on the Senate resolution sent to the Federal Government with timeliness.
“I thanked the government for taking a bold step to rescue the victims of the ocean surge in Ayetoro community through the donation of relief materials by the agency.
“It may also interest you that the government has directed the Ministry of Environment and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to carry out necessary construction works, to mitigate the ocean surge in the area.
“I hereby congratulate the good people of Ayetoro community for this timely intervention.
“It gladdens my heart that our voices have been heard by the government and other relevant agencies,” Tofowomo said. (NAN)
