With MATO featuring on the reported final list of candidates for Ondo South, the political conversation is shifting from speculation to the real contest for public confidence.
The reported inclusion of Hon. Mathew Oye Oyerinmade, popularly known as MATO, on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC’s) final list for the 2027 senatorial election, adds a fresh twist to the unfolding political drama.
With the Supreme Court controversy dominating much of the conversation surrounding his candidacy, a pertinent question confronts his critics: beyond this controversy, what compelling message do they have for the people of Ondo South?
Ondo South is far too consequential to be reduced to political speculation. From Ilaje’s fishing communities to Okitipupa’s commercial centres, and across Ese-Odo, Irele, Odigbo and Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo, people are concerned about their livelihoods, infrastructure, education, healthcare and the future of their children.
They deserve candidates who can articulate practical solutions, demonstrate an understanding of local challenges and explain how effective representation can translate into tangible benefits, a campaign cannot thrive on criticism of a rival alone; it must offer something substantial for the electorate to consider.
For MATO, appearing on the reported final list provides an opportunity to redirect attention towards his political journey, community engagement and proposals for the district. His opponents, meanwhile, face the challenge of broadening the conversation beyond one controversy.
In politics, the loudest voice is not necessarily the most persuasive, just as a repeated allegation does not automatically become an established fact. The real test lies in the substance of each candidate’s message, the credibility of their commitments and their ability to address the concerns of people across the six local government areas.
The political drums may be beating, but Ondo South is listening for substance. The latest development may encourage those who have followed MATO’s political journey, but the ultimate test remains public confidence at the ballot box.
If the opposition has a compelling alternative, this is the time to present it; if MATO has a convincing vision, this is the time to explain it. Ondo South deserves more than a contest of controversies; it deserves a contest of ideas, service and development. When the political dust finally settles, the people of Ondo South will have the final say.
