APC hits back at Amaechi over inability to afford mother’s medication claim

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised its former member and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, over his reported claim that he could not afford medications for his late mother’s treatment due to President Bola Tinubu harsh economic reforms.

In a statement signed by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, CON, and issued in Abuja on Sunday, October 4, 2026, the ruling party said Amaechi’s comments raised questions about his ability to manage his personal affairs outside public office.

The APC began the statement by offering prayers for the repose of the soul of Amaechi’s mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, while also wishing the former governor “excellent health of mind and body.”

The party described Amaechi as a former two-term Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor, two-term Minister of Transportation and former presidential aspirant who is currently the vice-presidential candidate of the ADC.

The APC, however, mocked Amaechi over his reported inability to pay for his mother’s medication, saying it hoped employers in his hometown of Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, would find him a suitable job.

“It is our sincere wish that employers of labour in his hometow may find him suitable for a job that pays wages sufficient for him to feed and buy medications for himself and his beloved family for the rest of his retirement,” the party said.

The APC also referred to what it described as Amaechi’s “uncanny confessions”, alleging that he had previously complained of being broke and dependent on his wife.

“First, he howled that he had become so broke and hungry that his wife was now feeding him. Now, he has stated that his inability to afford medications killed his mother at 89,” the party said.

The ruling party further accused Amaechi of relying on public office for his livelihood for decades, arguing that his reported financial difficulties after leaving office raised questions about his ability to remain productive outside government.

“For four decades, Rotimi Amaechi freeloaded at the highest levels of public office. He was never hungry and could afford medications for himself and his family,” the APC alleged.

It added, “Just three years out of office, he has become destitute, unable to fend for himself and his loved ones.”

The APC questioned Amaechi’s suitability for the vice-presidential position, accusing him of seeking a return to public office to continue benefiting from public resources.

“The same Amaechi now asks Nigerians to make him vice president come 2027, so he can continue leeching on the public treasury and keep the predatory lifestyle he has grown accustomed to,” the statement said.

The party further declared that “the presidency is not a soup kitchen and will not be a soup kitchen for Amaechi.

It concluded by saying Amaechi’s own comments constituted the strongest argument against his suitability for the position.

“No one can speak more to Amaechi’s unfitness for the office of Vice President than himself,” APC said.
