The Senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Prof. Dayo Faduyile, OON, has commiserated traders in Ore market, Odigbo Local Government Area of the state over the fire incident that razed no fewer than 14 shops on Aug.12.
In a statement made available to newsmen, Faduyile described the incident as “painful and unfortunate,” noting that it came at a time when traders were striving to rebuild their businesses amid current economic challenges.
The lawmaker said the destruction of goods and property worth millions of Naira was a major setback not only for the affected families but for the entire Ore Kingdom and Odigbo LGA.
“I received with deep sadness the news of the fire outbreak that engulfed a section of our market in Ore, It is heartbreaking that the sweat and investments of our hardworking market men and women were consumed by the inferno,” the statement read.
Prof. Faduyile, however, thanked God that no life was lost in the incident.
While sympathising with the victims, the Ondo South Senator advised traders and business owners to be more circumspect and adhere strictly to safety measures in the installation and use of electrical appliances and solar batteries.
“Preliminary reports have attributed the cause of this fire to a spark from a solar battery. This should serve as a wake-up call to all of us.
“We must engage only qualified technicians for electrical and solar installations, avoid overloading of circuits, and ensure we switch off appliances when closing for the day. Prevention is always better than cure,” he stated.
Faduyile also commended the prompt intervention of the Ondo State Government under the leadership of Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa for its swift response to the sad occurrence.
“I appreciate Mr. Governor for his immediate concern and for directing relevant agencies to assess the level of damage with a view to providing necessary support to the victims. This shows that the Aiyedatiwa administration is truly responsive and people-oriented,” he added.
The Senator called on well-meaning individuals, corporate organisations and government agencies to rally support for the affected traders to enable them to bounce back.
He further urged the Iyaloja and market leaders to work with relevant authorities to ensure proper fire safety mechanisms are put in place in all markets across Ondo South.
“Ore is a commercial hub for Ondo South. We cannot afford to lose our means of livelihood to avoidable disasters. Together, we will overcome this and rebuild stronger,” Faduyile said.
