Tragedy as father, teenage daughter die in abandoned well in Kano

A 45-year-old man, Abubakar Abdullahi, and his 15-year-old daughter, Fiddausi Abubakar, have lost their lives after falling into an abandoned dry well in Yancibi Village, Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi.

According to the statement, the Tsanyawa Fire Service Office received a distress call on the evening of Monday, July 21, informing officials that the father and daughter had fallen into the abandoned well.

Firefighters from the Tsanyawa station were immediately deployed to the scene and commenced rescue efforts.

However, the operation was suspended due to darkness and the difficult conditions around the well.

The Fire Service headquarters subsequently dispatched an emergency rescue team on Tuesday morning to reinforce the operation.

The victims were eventually recovered from the well unconscious and later confirmed dead.

The bodies were handed over to the Village Head of Yancibi, Shamsu Sani, for burial arrangements.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the teenage girl accidentally fell into the abandoned well, while her father entered in an attempt to save her but became trapped, leading to the deaths of both victims.

The Fire Service expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and urged members of the public to avoid entering wells or similar confined spaces without proper rescue equipment and trained emergency personnel, warning that such attempts could result in avoidable fatalities.
