Nigeria on Monday rose in celebration of elder statesman and foremost Afenifere leader, Chief Dr. Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, as Vice President Kashim Shettima, Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, traditional rulers, political leaders and admirers from across the country gathered in Akure to honour the revered nationalist on the occasion of his 100th birthday.
The centenary celebration, held at Pa Fasoranti’s residence along Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure, turned into a grand national tribute to a man widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s strongest moral voices, a courageous defender of justice, and an enduring symbol of principled leadership.
In separate powerful speeches, Vice President Shettima and Governor Aiyedatiwa paid glowing tributes to the nonagenarian, describing him as a living legend whose century-long life has become synonymous with integrity, courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to justice and national unity.
Gov. Aiyedatiwa, who led the Ondo State delegation at the celebration, described the occasion as more than a birthday ceremony, saying it was a historic moment to honour a man whose life has become deeply woven into the political and moral fabric of Nigeria.
“Today, time itself pauses for us to gather here in the presence of a great Nigerian and citizen of the world who has walked with history. We are not merely marking the passage of years; we are bearing witness to a living legacy,” the Governor declared.
“This grand celebration is not just of the years of an icon, but of his phenomenal meaning.”
Describing Pa Fasoranti as one of the rare figures whose life defines the moral character of an era, Aiyedatiwa said the elder statesman represents a century of honour, sacrifice, conviction and selfless service to humanity.
“There are men whose lives merely pass through history, and there are men who define the moral character of their age. Pa Reuben Fasoranti belongs to the latter category. His life has become synonymous with integrity, courage, discipline and principled leadership,” he said.
The Governor noted that Fasoranti’s 100th birthday is not merely a personal milestone, but a collective inheritance for society, given the values he has consistently embodied through decades of national service.
“A hundred years is an extraordinary milestone. It is history clothed in wisdom and experience refined into moral authority. And when such longevity is joined with integrity and selfless service, it becomes not merely a personal achievement, but a collective inheritance,” he added.
Aiyedatiwa praised the Afenifere leader for remaining steadfast through Nigeria’s political transitions and national uncertainties, saying he had never traded principle for convenience.
“Pa Reuben Fasoranti is not merely an elder statesman; he is an institution. Through political transitions, national uncertainty and changing times, he has remained remarkably steadfast, firm in principle, disciplined in conduct and fearless in defending what is right
“We stand here because one man chose to stand firm when it was easier to bend—for his people, for his principles and for generations he may never meet but has always believed in.”
In a strong political reflection, the Governor said Fasoranti’s enduring influence stems not from wealth or political office, but from the moral authority he has earned through a lifetime of honour and sacrifice.
“His voice still commands respect across Nigeria today, not because of wealth or political office, but because moral authority remains the highest form of authority any man can possess,” he said.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government, also delivered an emotional tribute, describing Chief Fasoranti as a rare patriot who has “lived a thousand lifetimes in one.”
“Live a thousand lifetimes in one, compressing into a single journey the courage of prophets, the patience of teachers, the sacrifices of patriots and the dignity of elders. The legend we gather to celebrate today is an eloquent reminder of these miracles,” Shettima said.
The Vice President noted that Fasoranti’s greatness lies not only in his longevity, but in his refusal to remain silent during defining moments in Nigeria’s history.
“Chief Fasoranti stands out because he never watched history from the safety of the pavilion. He gave voice to the underrepresented and sacrificed his comfort in doing so. He rejected the convenient silence of privilege and embraced the burden of advocacy, the loneliness of principle and the risk of standing with those whom society was tempted to ignore,” he stated.
Reflecting on the elder statesman’s journey through Nigeria’s political evolution—from colonial rule to independence, military dictatorship and democratic rebirth—Shettima described his unwavering commitment to justice as a vital part of the nation’s moral heritage.
“He witnessed the colonial period of this nation, the dawn of independence, the interruptions of military governments, the pain of truncated democracies and now our longest experience of constitutional rule.
“Such a life must count in the moral inventory of a nation, especially because he lived through these ages with an unbroken commitment to dispelling oppression in whatever form it appeared,” the Vice President said.
Shettima praised Pa Fasoranti’s courage in defending democratic values and speaking truth to power, even when doing so came at personal cost.
“Chief Fasoranti walked that road, paid the price, and has lived long enough to see history vindicate him. His experience counts because he did not live as a spectator,” he added.
Both leaders highlighted Fasoranti’s enduring humility despite his towering influence, describing him not only as the foremost leader of Afenifere, but also as a teacher, mentor, father and moral guide whose simplicity and quiet dignity continue to inspire generations.
Aiyedatiwa said the elder statesman’s life offers vital lessons for Nigeria, particularly for younger generations.
“The life of Pa Reuben Fasoranti answers the question of what kind of country we should build. His life teaches us that leadership is service. It teaches us that legacy is measured not by material accumulation, but by the impact we make in the lives we touch,” he said.
“To the younger generation, his life presents a rich syllabus for careful study. The world may celebrate instant success and fleeting glamour, but enduring greatness is built on discipline, sacrifice, consistency and fidelity to truth.”
In one of the most emotional moments of the event, Governor Aiyedatiwa reminded guests that Pa Fasoranti had witnessed Nigeria before independence and had played a defining role in shaping the nation’s democratic journey.
“Papa, you are not just 100 years old in age—you are 100 years old in history. You saw Nigeria before Nigeria. You have a huge and indelible signature on the firmament of our great country.
“You have lived not merely long, but very well. You have shown that integrity is still possible in public life, that decency is not weakness, and that courage anchored on conviction can outlive power and time itself.”
On behalf of the Federal Government, Vice President Shettima thanked the elder statesman for his immense contributions to education, democracy and nation-building.
“We thank you for your service to the nation. We thank you for your service to education. We thank you for your service to democracy. We thank you for your service to the cause of justice,” he said.
Gov. Aiyedatiwa also expressed gratitude to the Fasoranti family for sharing the elder statesman with the nation, acknowledging the suacrifices behind his lifelong public service.
The celebration drew eminent Nigerians, political stakeholders, traditional rulers and admirers from across the country, all united in honouring a man whose life has become a symbol of conscience, courage and uncommon patriotism.
As tributes poured in for the revered Yoruba leader, one message resonated across the gathering: Chief Reuben Fasoranti is not merely 100-years-old—he is 100 years of history, wisdom and enduring national significance.
