Don renews call for effective leadership, administrative qualities for Nigeria’s growth

Prof. Ehiyamen Mediayanose-Osezua, Dean, School of Management Sciences, Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, has renewed calls for effective leadership and administrative qualities by governments at all levels.

Mediayanose-Osezua, a Professor of Public Administration, gave the advice on Tuesday at the 11th Inaugural Lecture of OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Ondo State.

Mediayanose-Osezua, who gave a lecture titled “Governing Without Results: Public Administration, Leadership and Institutional Failure In Nigeria Quo Vadis?”, said the call was also for other sectors and would ensure Nigeria’s development.

According to him, leadership and administrative failure hinges on governing without results which have adverse effect on the Nigerian economy and it’s citizens.

“The challenges before Nigeria is at its core and an institutional one with leadership deficit, administrative weakness, corruption, political opportunism, judicial fragility, beaurecratic ineficiency and social disconnection.

“Nigeria will not rise on the strength of personalities alone but when institutions are credible, professional, disciplined, accountable and development oriented.

“The greatest tragedy of Nigeria is not the lack of institutions, talents or resources, but because they have not been mobilised with sufficient integrity, discipline, competence and developmental clarity.

“The way forward, therefore is not simply to call for better governance in a vague terms, but to insists on rebuilding of institutions that can outlive individuals, resist manipulations and deliver results.

“Government at all levels and other public sectors must engage in effective leadership and administrative qualities for Nigeria to rise better than it’s current state,” Mediayanose-Osezua said.

The don, however, listed several recomendations bothering on re-establishing merit as cornerstone of public service recruitment and promotion, institutionalising ethical governance and enforce consequences for misconduct, stregthening accountability systems in ministries, departments and agencies.

“Others include adoption of result-based governance as a national administrative principle, reform leadership recruitment and evaluation of public institutions, reduce the cost of governance and reorder public expenditure toward development.

Meanwhiile, Prof. Temi Ologunorisa, OAUSTECH’s Vice-Chancellor, urged government and other public sectors to adopt the recommendations of the lecture.

“That was indeed a fantastic lecture which was given to address decay in leadership and administrative qualities in our systems which needed to be addressed through the recommendations of the lecturer.

“The state government support for our institution is helping to boost our professors morale in doing more research morale for laudable and impactful lectures, which has made the institution witness the 11th Inaugural Lecture today,” Ologunorisa said.
