Gov. Dapo Abiodun has officially announced Sen. Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
The announcement, which is already reshaping the state’s political landscape, signals a major step in the ruling party’s early preparations for the next electoral cycle.
Abiodun made the declaration following consultations with key party stakeholders, leaders, and interest groups across the state, emphasizing unity and continuity within the APC.
According to the governor, the decision to adopt Adeola as a consensus candidate was reached after “extensive deliberations and alignment of interests” aimed at preserving party cohesion and strengthening its chances of retaining power in Ogun State.
Adeola, who currently represents Ogun West in the National Assembly, is widely regarded as a seasoned lawmaker with significant grassroots support.
His political profile, built on years of legislative experience and constituency engagement, is believed to have influenced the party’s decision to rally behind him ahead of the primaries.
Party insiders suggest the move is also designed to prevent internal divisions and costly primary battles that have previously weakened party structures in some states.
By presenting a unified front early, the APC leadership in Ogun hopes to consolidate support across all senatorial districts and maintain political dominance.
Reacting to the development, Adeola expressed gratitude to Abiodun and party leaders for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to justify the trust by delivering inclusive governance and building on the achievements of the current administration if elected.
Political observers note that while the consensus arrangement may strengthen the APC internally, it could also trigger reactions from other aspirants within the party and opposition groups, potentially setting the stage for intense political maneuvering in the coming months.
With the 2027 election still some months away, the endorsement marks the beginning of what is expected to be a highly strategic and closely watched governorship race in Ogun State.
