China executes 11 convicts over scam, cyber-crime, others

In what officials described as a decisive crackdown on cross-border cybercrime syndicates, the Chinese authorities have executed 11 individuals convicted for their roles in large-scale scam, fraud and criminal operations run from Myanmar,

The executions followed the conclusion of lengthy judicial proceedings in which the convicted persons were found guilty of multiple serious offences, including large-scale fraud, illegal gambling, unlawful detention and violent crimes linked to scam operations targeting Chinese citizens and victims across several countries.

The executions were carried out after death sentences passed by a lower court were reviewed and upheld by China’s Supreme People’s Court, which confirmed that the convictions were based on clear facts and sufficient evidence.

According to court findings, the criminal network operated sophisticated scam centres in border areas of Myanmar, commonly referred to as “scam compounds,” where victims were defrauded through online investment scams, telecom fraud and illegal gambling platforms. The syndicate was also accused of forcibly detaining and abusing workers, some of whom were trafficked into the operations.

The court ruled that the activities of the group caused enormous financial losses and were directly linked to the deaths and severe injuries of several Chinese nationals, describing the crimes as extremely harmful to society and deserving of the heaviest punishment under Chinese law.

Chinese authorities said the action underscores the country’s zero-tolerance stance against telecom fraud and transnational organised crime. In recent years,

China has intensified cooperation with neighbouring countries to dismantle scam networks operating across borders, leading to the arrest and repatriation of thousands of suspects.

Officials reaffirmed that the government will continue to pursue criminal syndicates involved in fraud and cybercrime, while strengthening regional collaboration to prevent the spread of such operations and protect citizens from online scams.
