The Oyo State Police Command has intercepted a truck loaded with materials believed to be explosives during a security operation in Ibadan, the state capital.
The truck was reportedly stopped in the Sango area of the city during a routine stop-and-search exercise carried out by operatives acting on credible intelligence.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that about 40 bags of the suspected explosive substances were recovered from the vehicle.
He said the driver of the truck was immediately arrested, while both the vehicle and the materials were taken into police custody for further action.
Olayinka added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Femi Haruna, had ordered a thorough investigation to unravel the source and destination of the materials.
According to him, experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear unit have been deployed to secure the items and conduct forensic examinations.
The police spokesperson assured residents that there was no cause for alarm, stressing that investigations were ongoing and updates would be communicated as more details emerge.
