Princess Catherine Odu Remembers Aketi: A Phenomenal Leader

Two years after the passing of former Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN (Aketi), former Secretary to the Government of Ondo State, Princess (Barr.) Catherine Oladunni Odu, has paid glowing tribute to the late statesman, describing him as a phenomenal leader, a principled boss, and a true friend whose legacy remains indelible.

In a heartfelt remembrance, Princess Odu said the passage of time has done little to dull the impact of Akeredolu’s life and service, noting that his memory still feels as fresh as yesterday. She recalled that the word “phenomenal” has remained the strongest expression of how she perceived him, dating back to their days of service as Commissioners in Ondo State.

Reflecting on Akeredolu’s tenure as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice during the military era, she identified three defining qualities that set him apart: uncommon boldness in speaking truth to power, an unwavering readiness to stand alone when convinced of the right course, and an unyielding commitment to defending the interests of the people.

According to her, Akeredolu often confronted authority when necessary, doing so with humility rather than arrogance. She noted that even when such interventions were uncomfortable, they were later appreciated because they were driven by sincerity and the greater good. She emphasized that he carried out these actions quietly, without seeking public acclaim, describing him as “a man driven by conscience.”

Princess Odu observed that nearly two decades later, when Akeredolu became Governor of Ondo State, he brought the same values, courage, and moral consistency to the office. She described him as a rare breed in public life, stressing that his principles remained unchanged by power or position.

She added that his administration was marked by purposeful leadership and people-oriented governance, leaving legacies that, in her words, “will be absolutely impossible to erase.”

On a personal note, Princess Odu expressed deep gratitude to the late governor for finding her worthy to serve the state in several capacities, most notably appointing her as the first female Secretary to the Government of Ondo State. She acknowledged his support and encouragement, noting that he empowered his appointees to succeed and trusted them to deliver.

She further recalled that Akeredolu related with those who worked with him more as a friend than a boss, a leadership style that earned him loyalty and lasting respect across board.

Princess Odu concluded by thanking God for the life and impact of the late governor and for all he was able to accomplish in service to Ondo State and humanity.

“Rest on, phenomenal Aketi,” she said.
