The Ondo State Government has dismissed reports alleging that the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) secretly increased electricity tariffs.
Engr. Johnson Alabi, the state’s Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources made this known while clarifying the allegations.
Reacting to the claims in his office, the Commissioner said, “The story is not true. What happened is the case of people who were recently migrated from lower bands to Band A, which is invariably costlier.”
He urged residents to remain calm and ignore the misleading reports. According to him, the adjustments being implemented are necessary and made in the overall interest of the people.
Engr. Alabi explained that the changes were not intended to cause hardship but to reflect the improved supply of cleaner and more reliable electricity across the state. He added that the goal is to enhance citizens’ welfare and promote fairness among consumers.
“Without a doubt, there has been a notable improvement in electricity supply across the metropolis. It is therefore important to understand that the adjustment aims to ensure fairness and equity among consumers. Residents who enjoy longer hours of supply on Band A are charged differently from those on Bands B, C, or D with lesser supply hours,” he stated.
The Commissioner clarified that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved the current tariff structure, which varies according to the number of supply hours enjoyed by each band.
He assured residents that the state government will continue to partner with Benin Electricity Ondo Limited (BEOL) to maintain the recent improvements in power supply and ensure transparency in all processes.
Engr. Alabi further appealed to residents to adopt efficient energy management practices to reduce costs and support sustainability.
“We must all actively seek ways to consume less energy. Turn off appliances when not in use, and support the government’s efforts toward achieving a stable and sustainable power system,” he advised.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Aiyedatiwa-led administration to expanding access to affordable, reliable, and clean energy for all residents of Ondo State.
