Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured their place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a dramatic 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa on Tuesday.
The intense semi-final clash at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium saw both sides battle fiercely, with Nigeria taking the lead just before halftime. Forward Rasheedat Ajibade calmly slotted home a penalty in the 45th minute after a foul inside the South African box.
South Africa’s Banyana Banyana responded early in the second half, also converting a penalty after a Nigerian defender was penalised for a challenge in the area. The equaliser set up a tense finish as both teams pressed for a winning goal.
The breakthrough finally came in the 90th minute when Nigerian defender Michelle Alozie delivered a moment of magic. From a free kick just outside the box, she curled a sublime effort into the net, leaving the South African goalkeeper rooted to the spot.
The victory sends Nigeria into the WAFCON final, where they will aim to claim a record-extending 10th title. The Falcons will face the winner of the second semi-final between hosts Morocco and Ghana’s Black Queens
