A don, Dr. Dipo Akomolafe, have said that the decision of the Federal Government to ban students under 18 years-old from taking part in government examinations will have adverse effect on the nation’s education system.
The Federal Government has officially banned students under the age of 18 from participating in the National Examinations Council (NECO) and West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examinations
Akomolafe, a former Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa Chapter, told NAN on Tuesday in Okitipupa that the government’s decision would compound the problem rather than solving it.
He added that the decision may not achieve any desired results because Nigerians, especially the academics, are still grasping for the rots and decadence in the education sector.
According to him, research have shown that the rate of assimilation is faster in children than in adults and that assimilation decreases as age increases.
“Age has no significant effect on educational achievement because a six year-old child may have the ability to grasp knowledge faster than a 20 year-old person.
“The government’s decision on age limit will have no positive consequences on our educational system, rather it will negatively affect children and the education sector.
“In developed countries, so many children have already graduated at the age of 18 and contributing wholly to the economic, political and social development of such countries.
“Placing such a ban on our children is one way to prevent them from contributing to the advancement of the country,”Akomolafe said. (NAN)
