To prevent a nationwide strike, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the leadership of the Nigeria Governors Forum have called for an emergency meeting with the leaders of the Organized Labour.
This sources familiar with the situation made this known on Sunday.
“A meeting has been convened by the Senate President and the Nigeria Governors Forum. It will take place tonight,” stated a highly knowledgeable source.
On Friday, the Organised Labour Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) announced an indefinite nationwide strike set to begin on Monday, June 3.
This decision came after the Federal Government meeting with Organised Labour was deadlock on Friday over inability of the FG to increase the proposed minimum wage above N60,000.
NLC President Joe Ajaero explained that the strike was a result of unsuccessful negotiations between the government and organized labour.
The government’s final offer stood at N60,000, which was an increase from an initial N57,000. However, labour unions deemed this amount insufficient.
During the meeting, the labour unions revised their demand, reducing it by N3,000 from the initial N497,000 proposed last week, bringing the new proposal to N494,000.
Despite this concession, negotiations remained at an impasse as the government held firm on its offer of N60,000, prompting the declaration of an indefinite nationwide strike.
