The Organised Labour, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended their planned nationwide indefinite strike action for the next one month.
This was contained in a Memorandum of Understanding signed on Monday by the organised Labour.
Recall that the unions had directed its affiliate member unions across the country to mobilise and shut down the country following the refusal of the government to adhere to its demands.
The Federal Government, however, in a move to avert the planned strike scheduled for October 3, invited the organised labour to a meeting at the Chief of Staff Conference Room, Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday.
The MoU was signed by NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja; TUC President, Festus Osifo, and Secretary General, Nuhu Toro.
On the part of Federal Government are: Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong; Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Dr Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.
“The NLC and TUC accept to suspend for 30 days the planned indefinite nationwide strike scheduled to begin, Tuesday, Oct. 3 the MoU reads in part.
“The Federal Government grants a wage award of N35,000 to all Federal Government workers beginning from the month of
September pending when a new national minimum wage is expected to have
been signed into law.”
Lalong said the Memorandum shall be filed with the relevant court of competent jurisdiction within one week as consent judgment by the FG.
However, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the unions would revisit the agreement if the FG fails to fulfil its demands.
