The unions of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa in Ondo State on Wednesday joined the nationwide protest declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NLC declared August 2, as a nationwide protest against the backdrop of untold hardship on Nigerians and workers over the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his inaugural speech on May 29 in Abuja
NAN also reports that the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol had since increased from N195:00 to N500:00 and N617:00 respectively as announced by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).
Mr Temidayo Temola, the Chairman, Joint Action Congress (JAC) of OAUSTECH told NAN on Wednesday in Okitipupa that they have to join the nationwide protest, describing the suffering as killing.due to the high level of suffering by Nigerian workers and the general public.
According to him, We matained that when this present demoractic dispensation was ushered in, Nigerians are filled with high hopes with a view of better standard of living.
“Today, the hopes are now forlon and workers are more impoverished than ever before in the annals of the country.
“We therefore join the nationwide protest on three reasons that: The Federal Government palliatives must be total and immediate.
“Our refineries and ailing industries must be revived and fashioning out and implementation of a living wage for workers among others to make Nigeria liveable,” he said.
Temola, however, said the that union members join the NLC chapter of the state in Akure to press home their demands.
NAN reports that the institution unions are: Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), National Association of Academic Technologist (NAAT), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS). (NAN)
